Argentina have parted company with manager Edgardo Bauza after a string of poor results that left the national team in serious jeopardy when it comes to qualifying for the World Cup 2018.

The 2-0 defeat against Bolivia has left to the national team in the fifth spot in the South American qualification group. Only the top four teams will be able to reach the World Cup automatically, while the fifth placed team will have got to a play-off, which might actually be tougher than expected after the recent changes to the format. Argentina are only one point behind Chile, who occupy the final fourth spot, but there is a serious danger of missing out on World Cup 2018.

Edgardo Bauza was appointed in his role only eight months ago. He has not made much of an impact while trying to take over from Gerardo Martino. Argentina have already suffered four defeats in the 14 World Cup qualification games. In fact, they have been able to achieve only six wins in this period.

This poor run of form has surprised many considering that the team was as some of the best players in the world like Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi. The wealth of attacking talent in the Argentina national team has not exactly translated into results.

Argentina will have to make a swift appointment before the game against Brazil in June. This is one of the high profile friendlies scheduled for the national team."Being head coach of Argentina has been a wonderful experience. I believe that Argentina will qualify for the World Cup.I thank the President, Claudio Tapia, because he was very frank when it comes to dialogue.I want to thank the players. It has been eight good months, leaving me very happy,” said Bauza. Interestingly, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has been touted as a potential replacement.
